What is ISO 45001?
45001 is the forthcoming standard from ISO which is designed to manage occupational health and safety in the workplace. It will supersede OHSAS 18001 and is an international standard which will be recognised all over the world as a benchmark of robust OHS systems.
Why are they changing it from OHSAS 18001 or AS/NZS 4801?
International standards, such as ISO 9001, are reviewed periodically to ensure that they are fit for purpose and are aligned with modern developments in the industries for which they are designed. This migration from OHSAS 18001 to an ISO standard is quite normal and will ensure that the internationally recognised standard is relevant, timely and suited to effective management.

Our company is certified to OHSAS 18001/AS NZS 4801. What does this mean for us?
No need to panic. There is usually a 3 year grace period to move from the existing standard to the new one, in this case ISO 45001. However it is recommended that you begin aligning your system with 45001 upon its release to make the transition as painless as possible. A Peoplesafe Consultant can assist you with this.
How do i align this to my other systems - ISO 9001 and ISO 14001?
This may be good news for you. If you are working to the new revisions of these standards (2015), then the new ISO 45001 standard will be easy to align. This is because on paper the OHS standard follows the conventions of the Quality and Environmental ones. To integrate them will require a little work but will result in a clean system that integrates all 3 key areas. Again, a qualified, professional Peoplesafe Consultant can assist your business to make this transition as easy and non disruptive as possible?
What if we decide not to move to ISO 45001?
If you decide not to align your system to the new standard, then you will see out your current certification period with OHSAS 18001 or AS/NZS 4801 and may either re-certify your old standard up until the cut off date (likely 3 years from 45001 release) or allow your certification to lapse and not operate to a certified system. Peoplesafe recommends alignment with 45001 in order to ensure the wellbeing of your workforce and to demonstrate to your clients and other stakeholders that you are adequately managing risk.
Peoplesafe is closely monitoring the developments regarding 45001 and if you have any further questions or wish to discuss potential transition programs from your existing standard, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0428 562952 or email@example.com
